Sweet Delight Head Wrap (Free Crochet Pattern)
Introduction and Inspiration
I’ve been wanting to create a pattern for a head wrap or ear warmer since they’re all the craze right now (not just that, though I’m not really a hat person so this is much more my style when it comes to keeping my ears warm) but was having trouble coming up with something original. There are so many beautiful creations out there already and it’s so hard to not be influenced by others sometimes, right?! And then it just hit me one day! I sat down with my hook and some yarn and out came this beauty in no time! Now, granted, it took a couple of tries after that to get it exactly how I wanted it, but ultimately I’m very pleased with how it came out.
Techniques Used
The Lemon Peel Stitch is and has been one of my favorite crochet stitches for years. It’s super simple to work up (all it is is alternating single crochets and double crochets if you didn’t already know!) and gives such a beautiful texture. I really love the ‘crossed’ ear warmer style that has gotten uber popular recently so I definitely wanted to incorporate that into my design as well. So here’s the Sweet Delight Head Wrap!
The pattern is written in 3 different sizes; toddler (1-3 years), child (3-10 years), and adult (21-23″ head circumference). It has quite a bit of positive ease as this textured stitch is pretty stretchy. The single crochet border will prevent it from being quite as stretchy and is also optional based on your personal preferences. Anyway, here’s the pattern and I can’t wait to see all the color combos and styles you all come up with!
Materials
80-115 yards category 3/lightweight yarn (Some of the yarns my testers and I used and recommend are Yarn Bee Must Be Merino, Premier Everyday Baby, Baby Bee Sweet Delight, Lion Brand Ice Cream, Bernat Softee Baby)
Small amount of Yarn Bee Snuggle Up or comparable yarn such as Bernat Pipsqueak or Lion Brand Spinella for fur trim (optional)
4.5mm hook (or size needed to obtain correct gauge) (I use these!)
Yarn needle for weaving in ends (I use a smaller one like these for the regular yarn and a larger one like these for the furry yarn)
Notes
-Please swatch before you begin your project and get as close to my gauge as possible. As little as a 1/4″ variance can result in incorrect sizing.
-I recommend counting your rows as you go or placing a marker every so many rows to keep track of what row you are on as it can be difficult to count rows with this textured stitch.
-* * indicates a repeat
-(x, x, x) at the end of the row indicates how many total stitches for that row
-Toddler (child, adult); Use the corresponding number for the size you are making
