The Working Man Beanie (Free Knitting Pattern)

Introduction

I chose the name ‘Working Man Beanie’ because I designed this beanie with the outdoor, hard working man in mind.  My significant other works in construction so the high vis orange was a must (have you looked for Chartreuse yarn?!).  It was a win-win-win with this color as he’s a Tennessee Volunteers fan AND he also has a set of coveralls this same color! Talk about meant to be..

Inspiration

There are so many adorable ‘Mommy and Me’ sets out there but what about ‘Daddy and Me’ sets?! You don’t see very many (if any!) of those so here’s a hoorah for that too! But it doesn’t have to be masculine, of course, throw a pom on it for a special sweetheart or make it in pink to let the inner feminine potential out!

About The Yarn

I wanted something fast, thick, and warm so as soon as I saw this Lion Brand Hometown USA in Syracuse Orange at my local JoAnn I knew that’s what I would use.  After that, I just picked up my needles and this simply constructed beanie just kinda made itself magically through my fingers 😉

Techniques Used

The Working Man Beanie is super beginner friendly using only knit and purl stitches. You don’t even have to bind off! The most novice of knitters can tackle this project making it perfect for craft shows or Christmas gifts!

Materials

Approximately 60-80 yards Lion Brand Hometown USA, Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick or any super bulky weight yarn (a few different yarns I recommend are Bernat Softee Chunky, Red Heart Grande, Lion Brand Mandala Thick & Quick or even some Bernat Blanket would make a super cozy beanie!)

Us Size 11/8mm 16″ circular needles (I use these!)

Yarn needle for weaving in ends (I use these for larger yarn like this!)

Notes

-If switching colors between the brim and the body, subtract one row from the brim and add one row of K sts in new color before beginning R1 of the body.  This will ensure a smooth color change.

-Toddler [ages 1-3] (Child [ages 3-10], Adult Small [20-22″], Adult Medium/Large [22″-24″]); use corresponding number for the size you are making

-*   * indicates a repeat

-(xx) at end of row indicates how many total stitches for that row

8sts is 4″ (10cm) (height of stitches is not important for this project)

Pattern

Building the brim:

Foundation: CO 36 (40, 42, 44), join in the round, PM

R1-4 (5, 6, 6) *K1, P1* (36, 40, 42, 44), SM

Body

R1 *P1, K1* (36, 40, 42, 44), SM

R2 *K1, P1* (36, 40, 42, 44), SM

Repeat R1-2 until your hat measures 6.5″ (7″, 8″, 8.5″)

Break yarn leaving about a 12″ tail.  Thread the long tail and pass through all loops on needles.  Remove needles.  Cinch tight, pass yarn to the inside of your work and weave in end, passing several times to secure. Weave in any other ends and you’re done!
