Cozy Knit Dickey (Free Dickie Knitting Pattern)
A dickey (also spelled ‘dickie’) is like a turtleneck collar that’s made to provide extra warmth for your neck and shoulders under a sweater, jacket, cardigan, or otherwise. This free dickie knitting pattern is a fun twist on a classic dickie design.
I had seen this accessory design before but never knew that there was a proper name for them until recently. I had wanted to design one for a while and after designing my Softly Angled Scarf, I knew that would be the perfect technique to use for this design as well.
Scroll to find the knitting pattern completely free (with ads of course) and if you’d like to purchase an inexpensive, ad-free PDF pattern, find it on Ravelry, Etsy, or LoveCrafts.
Techniques Used
This fun and practical dickey is written with the most novice knitter in mind. It’s comprised with mostly garter stitch and very simple increases and decreases. The techniques used to create the opening for the cowl neck will help you practice more if you are a newer knitter.
I also love the ‘eyelet’ edging that the simple yarn over increases create. I think it gives it the perfect feminine touch without compromising any warmth. You could also eliminate the eyelets by working a M1 or KFB to make it more unisex.
The turtleneck knit collar (the neck part) is made by picking up stitches along the opening of the back and front panel and working in the round in a 1×1 twisted rib pattern. The cowl pattern is worked to be stretchy enough to fit most every size head circumference.
About the Yarn
This pattern is written using double strands of worsted weight yarn. You could also use a single strand of bulky yarn if you’d like, making sure that you check gauge.
I love the color possibilities with the double strands of worsted, though. The one pictured above was made with Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in the colorway Painted Canyon paired with a solid black strand and I absolutely love the finished product!
